A detached fortress of St. Lawrence (Fort Lovrijenac), also known as “Dubrovnik’s Gibraltar”, is built upon a 37 meter high rock as part of the Dubrovnik defence system. The Venetians, the biggest rivals of Republic of Dubrovnik, attempted to build their own fort on the same spot, but Dubrovnik’s people manage to deter their ships carrying materials for the new fort by already finishing the construction of the fortress within just three months. Over the entrance to Lovrijenac fortress a Latin inscription reads:NON BENE PRO TOTO LIBERTAS VENDITUR AURO, meaning “Freedom is not sold for all the gold in the world” which became the city’s motto. Lovrijenac is one of the favorite spots for the fans of the hit series “Game of Thrones” as it appeared in several scenes that took place in King’s Landing, the capital of Seven Kingdoms.
