After a sold-out tour in Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Vienna and Geneva and more than 20,000 spectators last year, The Great Gatsby Ballet is finally coming to Zagreb!
Judging by the music and cultural offer, it seems that 2017 will be an interesting year. After Cats Musical was completely sold out, Arena Zagreb will host another spectacle, The Great Gatsby Ballet, which will premiere in Zagreb on October 14 2017, scena.hr reports.
Based on a famous novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby Ballet is a choreographic show, created by an international team of professionals. The play unites the best parts of parallel genres of art: classical ballet, contemporary dance and cinematography.
The novel that the ballet is based on was published in 1925. The protagonist, Jay Gatsby, is a mysterious rich young man, tormented by love troubles, whose story is told by Gatsby’s friend, Nick Carraway. The novel is set in the Roaring Twenties, the post-war period in America which was marked by Prohibition, general decadence and a rise in organized crime and illegal activities.
Fitzgerald’s book and the 2013 movie have a cult following, so it’s no wonder that people want to experience the atmosphere present in the book and the movie again.

Top composer Konstantin Meladze composed the unique musical numbers for The Great Gatsby Ballet.
Denis Matvienko, Guest Principal of the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, New National Theatre in Tokyo, and many other theatres, is the art director and his dance moves match the role of Jay Gatsby he plays perfectly. Zagreb audience had the opportunity to see Denis perform at Lisinski last year, where he appeared with in the sold-out Radio and Juliet, a ballet-rock spectacle performed to the music of Radiohead.
