Kolocep Island Receives 60 New Composters

Kolocep takes the green initiative!

As DuList reported on the 4th of May 2017, Koločep (Kalamota) is the first island in the wider Dubrovnik area to become a shining example of sustainable waste management. In cooperation with the islanders, the Kalamota Association (Udruga Kalamota) has launched a series of activities for clearing up the beautiful Elaphiti island, so plans for a new landfill site covered with natural, autochthonous stone fits perfectly into the vision of the stunning emerald green island and its residents, says Cistoca.

Suggestions from locals from both Gornje and Donje Celo include baskets for the separate collection of paper, plastic, smaller items of rubbish and for bags for dog and other animal waste. Citizens can now apply for free composters owing to great cooperation between the Kalamota Association and Cistoca. A total of 60 completely biodegradable composters, along with their necessary materials were distributed to the islanders. The initiative taken up by Kolocep’s inhabitants is a sign of progressive recognition of not only the need for sustainable, environmentally friendly waste management but of respect to their surroundings. The specifics of life on islands is considerably different to that of life on the mainland, such a positive step forward in the desire to preserve the beauty of Kolocep highlights the level of human awareness towards potential problems that can arise from being ignorant to unsustainable and non-environmentally friendly waste disposal and management.

This active step forward and the inclusion of the entire community makes it possible to establish an entirely new waste manegement system on Kolocep and cause a domino effect on other islands following in the same footsteps.
