I’m certain all of us can agree that protecting wildlife is more than necessary these days, but suddenly bumping into wild animals on the street in populated areas can be a bit… unpleasant.
The city of Rovinj is currently facing a growing problem of wild boars and jackals leaving their natural habitats and crossing into green areas intended for recreation and leisure – imagine enjoying a picnic and turning around to see you’ve been joined by a sow and her offspring. To be fair, the animals have no other option due to their environment being transformed into roads, houses and holiday homes, but the fact they are often seen around the tourist areas and beaches such as Golden Cape, Palud and Škaraba presents a problem for the City. There’s also been a spike in traffic accidents where wild animals are hit by vehicles in passing while they’re crossing the road in urban areas, presenting a danger for all included parties.
As the law doesn’t allow the City to take over the custody of wildlife from hunters, they united to plan a project of removing the animals from the areas that aren’t hunting grounds and place them back in their natural habitat. The City and the associations of hunters are waiting for the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Energy to give the last word; if their proposal passes, the projects will be implemented starting from September.
