Today, most everyone who visits Split has heard of Bačvice beach. With roughly 5-6k people visiting the popular beach per day in the height of the summer season, it’s impossible to miss – and we’re sure if you’re a twenty-something, you’ve definitely frequented one of the many beach clubs that line Bačvice’s coast.
But what do you know about the history of Bačvice beach?
Bačvice beach was built in 1891 with a wooden pier. At first, the beach was separated for men and women: the western part of the beach was reserved for men, and the eastern part for women and children. If genders were caught mixing or swimming together, they would be served with a fine and possibly sent to jail.
In the years that followed, the beach became increasingly popular, and as Split continued to grow, the city decided to purchase the beach for a 30 year period.
After a bit of fixing up, the city of Split opened the beach to the public on May 18, 1919.
While improvements have been made over the years, the beach has essentially remained unchanged since 1928.
