And you thought your job interview was stressful

You might think that this photo is photoshopped, but not only is it genuine, it happened in Zagreb, too!

On April 6, 1932, a housewife on her way back from Dolac was shocked to realise that a man was standing on top of one of the Cathedral’s towers. First, he stood on one leg and then, to the amazement of a thousand people watching this spectacular event from the ground, stood on his head for a couple of seconds.

The man was Mato Juričić, a 26-year-old from Pula. After failing a test to become a firefighter, this was his way of trying to impress the squad with his fitness and skills to make them reconsider hiring him – which they did.
He spent the next 42 years working as a firefighter.

He was arrested after getting down, but he was soon released. In an interview for the newspaper Večer, he commented that his stunt didn’t require any special skills and that he thought he would have been able to stay there longer and climb higher if it hadn’t been for the wind. Some spectators even offered him money, but the detectives who arrested Mato prohibited him from taking any.
