Did you know that Solin has its own access to the sea?
If you didn’t know, don’t worry, you’re not alone.
Mramorna is the beach for the people of Solin, named after the nearby sawmill which produced marble scraps. Known as a very popular bathing area for the people of Solin some 70 years ago, Mramorna beach was once equipped with showers, the smell of tamarisk trees, and hundreds of bathers, reports Dalmacija Danas on June 22, 2017.
Unfortunately, everything changed with the heavy industrialization of the Solin basin – two of INA’s ships were used as a fuel depot, followed by the construction of a pipeline. The beach soon lost its appeal, and the area was so polluted that the sea in the area changed color.
After the “fall” of the big polluters in the area, the sea gradually returned to normal, but the beach remained neglected, untidy, and overgrown with weeds.
In recent years, things began to change primarily through an initiative of the citizens in the Facebook group “Solin…ljepota koja ne prolazi.” The group organized many actions to clean the sea, the last of which took place last weekend.
Life is gradually coming back to Mramorna beach, and in fact, the famous Split beach game “picigin” is said to have returned to the beach after 60 years!
