Richard Hammond talks about what went through his head during his near fatal crash in Switzerland
Richard Hammond, member of the Grand Tour Team and former Top Gear presenter, who crashed Mate Rimac’s Concept One on June 10, is back in the UK after his surgery in Switzerland.
He and Mate Rimac, Rimac CEO, discussed the crash with Alistair Weaver.
“So you went off the track here. You’re flying something like 30 m, hitting the road under you and then continue rolling downwards the slope,” Rimac explains in the video.

“I do remember saying to them Drag me by my arms, not my legs because I think I’ve broken that leg,” Hammond says.
Hammond was very lucky because there were three houses nearby and his car narrowly avoided all of them, but the car hurtled 110 m down a hill.
“I was aware that I was up, that I was high, that inevitably the car was going to come down. And yeah, of course, there was a moment of dread, ‘Oh God, I’m going to die.’ And also I was aware that the car was taking just such a beating. I mean, if you look at those craters, that’s a big hole,” Hammond answers the interviewer’s question as to what was going through his head while the crash was happening.
