URBACT, a European exchange and learning programme promoting sustainable urban development, has named two Croatian cities, Zagreb and Pazin, its good practice cities, pogledaj.to reports on July 28.
The good practice in Pazin refers to participatory budgeting which allows direct participation of citizens in the decision-making on city budget fund. Find out more here

“Through the introduction of innovative methods, the city of Zagreb (HR) has made the revitalisation of public spaces possible. The project “Zagreb for me” envisages almost simultaneous interventions in at least 17 locations in the city. The project aims at initiating collaboration between the city, its citizens, institutions and programmes to encourage dialogue and exchange of ideas. By using an innovative methodology, the new added value of the city and citizens has multiple dimensions: social development achieved through participation in decision-making, cohesion, innovation and professional approach.” (URBACT)
For more than ten years, URBACT, a European Territorial Cooperation programme aiming to foster sustainable integrated urban development in cities across Europe, has functioned as an instrument of the Cohesion Policy, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, the 28 Member States, Norway & Switzerland.
URBACT’s mission is to enable cities to work together and develop integrated solutions to common urban challenges, by networking, learning from one another’s experiences, drawing lessons and identifying good practices to improve urban policies.
It showcases 97 Good Practices for sustainable urban development from 25 European countries, covering a wide variety of topics a city might work on: from climate adaptation to city transport plans; from the inclusion of migrants to digital innovation.
Two Croatian cities are among them: Pazin and Zagreb. The two cities’ representatives will attend the award ceremony at URBACT City Festival in Tallinn, Estonia, October 3 – 5, 2017.
More than 450 local authority representatives will attend the ceremony with an aim of finding out good practices and networking. Each of the Good Practice cities will have the opportunity to apply to lead a Transfer Network to mentor other cities to adopt the practice locally, starting in 2018.
