A proper drama played out near the hospital Dr Martin Horvat in Rovinj last night. At 00:50, the Fire Department Rovinj got a panicked call from the German catamaran La Bella that ran aground near the hospital beach, reports Glas Istre.
Eviliano Gašpić, commander of the fire department, said the firemen saved six people from what could’ve been a very tragic outcome.
“We found six people on board – a five-year-old, two women and three men. We got them off the boat, carried them to our vehicle and provided them with accommodation at our department seat”, said Gašpić.
All six tourists got out off the shipwreck without any injuries, but according to Gašpić, in spite of their nautical experience, they were terrified. When the firefighting unit arrived at the scene of the accident, water was bursting out of the stranded catamaran because it suffered two tears at the keel. Fortunately, no fuel leaked out anywhere.
The catamaran has since been retreived and towed off to get fixed.
It’s been a busy couple of days for the firemen in Rovinj, as they recently put out a fire in Bale, and then went off to deal with the aftermath of the storm that hit Istria on Thursday.
