Though we have yet to close the doors on this frigid winter, The Guardian names the 25 best beaches in Europe in hopes of warming eager travelers for the summer season.
We know that this winter has been unusually bleak, with the ‘Beast from the East’ and Storm Emma wreaking havoc across Europe – islands in Dalmatia even saw their first snowfall since 2012! As we sit at home begging for warmer temperatures and dream of drips of sweat during our summer holiday, The Guardian has prepared a list of the 25 best beaches in Europe to help you plan your sunny getaway while you hibernate through the rest of winter. As you might have guessed, Croatia made the cut with four beach locations.
While Croatia is no stranger to being included in many of The Guardian’s valued lists, it is common to see recycled destinations already dubbed the best hundreds of times – expect for now. This time, not only has The Guardian named four of Croatia’s beautiful beaches in their top 25 best, but they’ve included four less-popular beaches many people living in Croatia may find as a surprise on March 3, 2018.
The Guardian travel contributor Mary Novakovich first names Sveti Jacob in Dubrovnik, a little-pebbled beach to the south, as a good escape from Croatia’s most popular tourist destination. Because the beach is not the easiest to get to (try a 30-minute walk from the Old Town and down 160 steps), the everyday beachgoer is usually turned off from visiting this beach, but the shaded pines, views, and seaside restaurant at Sveti Jacob make the trip well worth it.
Posedarje near Zadar is the next less popular gem named by Novakovich, who calls this laid-back beach perfect for families. With only one hotel in the town, its no surprise Posedarje sees fewer people than your average beach 25 kilometers away in Zadar.
The “heavenly” Pupnatska Luka on the island of Korčula also made the list, known for its deep bay, forested bluffs, white pebbles and chill terrace at Konoba Mijo.
Livačina on Rab island completes the selection, and is the intimate bay located next to the island’s most popular beach, Rajska. A sandy beach with shallow waters, Livačina can get crowded in the summer due to its proximity to Rajska, but an escape to the Santa Marija beach bar can cure any bout of excess.
