ZAGREB, March 12, 2018 – Following heavy snowmelt, the town of Hrvatska Kostajnica, 70 kilometres southeast of Zagreb, is bracing for landslides as well as floods due to the swollen River Una.
The state road between Hrvatska Kostajnica and Dvor at the suburb of Kuljani was closed to traffic on Monday due to a risk of the outflow of the river. Accordingly, a flood alert has been issued.
In the night between Saturday and Sunday, a huge stone from the limestone hill fell into a yard between two houses in the centre of Hrvatska Kostajnica. There were no casualties.
The town of Karlovac which lies on four rivers has also been preparing for flooding and necessary steps have been taken to help local inhabitants protect their homes in the areas with the risk of flooding due to the melting of snow.
A few towns in the basins of Kupa, Una, Dobra and Sava rivers have been preparing for flooding as well.
