Due to Fewer Vaccinations, Measles Spreading in Croatia’s Neighbourhood

ZAGREB, March 13, 2018 – Ten people have died of measles in Serbia in the last five months, the public broadcaster RTS reported on Monday.

The last victim is a 42-year-old woman from Novi Pazar in the south of the country, where so far 19 cases of measles have been reported. In the neighbouring town of Tutin, 83 cases of measles have been reported. The victims include two children under the age of five and two health workers.

According to the national public health institute, from early October 2017 to March 5 this year, 3,123 people contracted measles in Serbia and the part of Kosovo covered by the Kosovska Mitrovica public health institute.

Serbian Health Minister Zlatibor Lončar on March 7 called on citizens to act responsibly, urging people who still have not vaccinated their children against measles to do so as soon as possible and the media to help promote the vaccination campaign.

The measles epidemic started in October 2017 in the north of Kosovo, spreading to central Serbia.
