May the 31st, 2026 – A tourist was arrested in Cavtat yesterday after brazenly walking around in public wearing a Ratko Mladić shirt.

One of the most talked-about stories in Croatia of the last two days centres on the arrest of a foreign national in Cavtat after he was reportedly seen wearing a shirt depicting war criminal Ratko Mladić. The former Bosnian Serb military commander was convicted of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

the shirt sparked outrage – and rightly so

Disgraced commander Ratko Mladić remains one of the most despised figures associated with the breakup of Yugoslavia and the Homeland War. Known as the Butcher of Bosnia, his depraved actions as commander of Bosnian Serb forces during the Bosnian War, he was ultimately sentenced to life imprisonment by international courts for genocide and other wartime crimes, including the infamous Srebrenica massacre and the siege of Sarajevo. Because of that appalling legacy, public displays perceived as glorifying Mladić naturally provoke very strong reactions across Croatia and neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The incident attracted particular attention because it happened in the Dubrovnik region, an area that experienced direct attacks and destruction during the Homeland War. For many residents of southern Croatia, wartime memory remains deeply personal and painful, meaning symbols associated with convicted war criminals are often viewed very differently than they might be elsewhere.

The police became involved after members of the public reportedly reacted to the shirt and alerted authorities. The individual was subsequently detained, with the case generating immediate debate online about freedom of expression, public order laws and the limits of acceptable conduct in tourist destinations.

Photos and reports from the incident spread rapidly across social media, where reactions were overwhelmingly emotional. Many users argued that displaying the image of a convicted war criminal in a region heavily affected by conflict was provocative and disrespectful. Others focused on the broader question of how European countries deal with symbols connected to war crimes and extremist figures.

The case has also revived a recurring discussion about the public glorification of wartime figures. Across the former Yugoslavia, symbols connected to the conflicts of the 1990s continue to generate controversy, particularly when they appear in public spaces or tourist areas. Incidents involving images of Ratko Mladić in particular regularly attract media attention because they touch on unresolved historical tensions that remain politically and emotionally sensitive decades after the wars ended.

For many, the Cavtat case is not really about a controversial shirt. It is about the continued sensitivity of wartime history in not only Croatia but Dubrovnik in particular, and the intense pain and insult any display of such evil will cause. Judging by the intensity of the public reaction, it is likely to remain one of the country’s most discussed stories over the coming days.
