Something new for Krk!
As Morski writes on the 7th of June, 2018, as part of the international project for the preservation of the heritage of Northern Adriatic region, a brand new centre dedicated to the area’s rich maritime heritage has been opened in the old part of the City of Krk.
In a modern and interactive way, the maritime tradition of the area is being presented in the “Leut” workshop, where Krk’s renowned Željko Skomeršić will await all visitors, Josip Krmpotić of Radio Rijeka reports.
A lot of successful work has been done on both the Croatian and Slovenian sides of the Adriatic. Owing to access to European Union funds, over one million, 839,000 euro in non-refundable funds has been drawn out for the reconstruction of this area’s maritime heritage, so there are grounds for deep satisfaction in both Piran and Izola in neighbouring Slovenia, as well as in Croatia’s Mošćenička Draga, the location of the “House of the Sea” and on the island of Krk – where the newly opened maritime centre will tell the beautiful story of the sea and its seamen, well worth a million kuna.
Krk’s mayor, Darijo Vasilić, pointed out the fact that the picturesque town of Krk is both a historical and cultural centre, a true promoter of maritime traditions and heritage, not to mention the city that had the first sailing club on the Adriatic way back in the year 1876.
Prefect Zlatko Komadin is also satisfied with the way things have been going in this area and made sure to reiterate the fact that the county over which he presides is the leading partner in this particular project, and this is just one of the many European projects to turn the area’s precious maritime traditions and cultural heritage into a tourist offer.
What is of paramount importance is that the number of inhabitants on the islands, with all of their very specific problems, doesn’t decline. The county prefect emphasised that the quality of life on the islands is continually getting better, and that same quality has been progressing, especially with regard to Krk.
“That’s why all the projects like the LNG [terminal] should really be dealt with carefully and that it all properly fits together, so that the landscape doesn’t change and that one doesn’t undo the other,” concluded Komadina.
