More details on yesterday’s killing of a young Briton on the island of Pag.
Several foreign nationals were assaulted in front of the nightclub on the Zrće beach on the island of Pag on Wednesday morning and one of them was killed, a 26-year-old British citizen. Two more persons were injured, while several people associated with this event have been held by the police for questioning, reports Jutarnji List on June 28, 2018.
According to unofficial information, the deceased 26-year-old Ugo W. received five stabs and died on the spot. The tragedy was preceded by a conflict between two groups of young men, after which one of the attackers took out a knife. Unofficially, it is possible that the incident was a clash between two English criminal groups and that the possible motive could be the drugs. The police have received the information that the young men were arguing about where the groups would sell drugs.
The British media has also reported on the murder. Reporters for the Sun talked to witnesses on Pag. A 19-year-old young man from Dublin said the 24-hour festival was suddenly interrupted and that the music stopped playing immediately after the terrible attack. “I saw a man lying on the floor in a pool of blood and another young man standing there, his back covered with blood. The third hugged the injured person who was standing and held his shirt or some piece of clothing on his back to stop the bleeding. In just a few seconds, a lot of people had gathered around the man on the floor and I never saw him again. But I saw a bloody trace on the floor from the stage towards the exit,” said the tourist who did not want to reveal his name.
“Everything was hurried, it was clear that everyone was in shock. DJ had to stop playing the music and only said that there was a serious incident and that everyone must leave the club,” he added.
Edi Karuc, deputy director of the Zadar General Hospital, confirmed that a 26-year-old man with several stabbing wounds was hospitalized. Even though his condition is stable, he is still in danger.
A local waiter on Zrće said: “It seems to have been a conflict among the young Britons. The police are investigating the case. The local population is shocked by this crime. This happened only two days after an 18-year-old British man was killed in a car accident near Rijeka while trying to run over the motorway to reach a McDonald’s restaurant on the other side. This is a very bad advertisement for our tourism. I hope the police will quickly solve the case.”
The young men were staying at the Gajac apartment complex on the opposite side of the island, which is about two kilometres away from Zrće.
The police were assisted by the surveillance cameras of the Kalypso club in front of which the tragedy took place around 5.30 am on Wednesday, as well as by testimonies of a group of young men who were taken to the Novalja police station just after the event. The man the police are looking for is dark-skinned, tall and has short hair. He was wearing shorts and sneakers.
