Voices from the Korčula Classroom: Marija P., 7th Grade

Total Croatia News

June 28, 2018 – One area where Dalmatian islands are among the best places in the world is in safety and an idyllic, natural and unpressured start to life, surrounded by loving family and without the commercial trappings of other societies. So it would make sense to get a feeling of life on Korčula through the eyes of its most precious resource – its children. We are very grateful to Korčula school and its pupils for agreeing to share their impressions about life on the island – what they love, what they would like to improve. The second in the series, a great piece from 7th-grader, Marija P.

My name is Marija Penjak. I am finishing the 7th grade of the primary school “ Petar Kanavelić “ on the island of Korčula, Croatia. There I live with my family in the town named the same as the island.

The bright side of living on the island is that everything, such as markets and cafes, restaurants…are nearby, so you don’t have to use any means of transport to get to most of these places.

However, the bad side of the island is that we don’t have fully equipped hospital so if something really bad happens we go to hospitals by helicopters.

During the wintertime, we sometimes have bad weathers, strong winds and rough seas, so it is hard to get to the mainland. But in summer you can feel amazing Mediterranean climate and those beautiful, warm days with breathtaking sunsets make us really happy.

The City of Korčula is very famous for its old town and beautiful archipelago surrounded by many small islands. The Island of Korčula was discovered by the Greek hero, Anthenor. When you are arriving for the first time to Korčula you will see the old town surrounded by the old walls and St.Marko`s Cathedral which was built in the 15th century. Also, Korčula is known as the birthplace of a famous traveler, Marko Polo. Here you can find his house. We are very proud of it!

We have 3 brotherhoods: Old Saints, St Michael and St Roko. The procession on St Theodore`s Day is amazing! One more important information: Korčula has the oldest statue in the whole of Europe. So, a lot of history in my town!

Apart from history, we are well – known for modern hotels and apartments. We are becoming a great tourist destination.

Well, that is something about my hometown. I hope that you have learned something useful. Anyway, don’t waste your time reading this! Come and join me as my guest so you could discover the most beautiful island on the Croatian coastline!
