ZAGREB, September 19, 2018 – Milanka Opačić, a senior member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and member of parliament, said on Wednesday that she was leaving the SDP and that she would continue her political career as an independent member of parliament.
Opačić addressed reporters in parliament ahead of the start of the legislature’s new session, announcing that as an independent she would support any good legal proposal regardless of the party proposing it, and that she would maintain her identity as a Social Democrat.
Speaking about the reasons for leaving the SDP, Opačić said that the last party meeting had revealed that the two opposed sides in the SDP cared only about their own interests and that in the present intra-party relations her role had become irrelevant.
