Borna Ćorić has advanced to the round of 16 at the Shanghai Masters, while Marin Čilić concluded his Shanghai appearance with an unexpected defeat in the second round.
Marin Čilić lost to Chilean player Nicolas Jarry 6-2, 6-7 (6), 5-7 after more than two hours of play, while Borna Ćorić sealed a 6-4, 6-2 victory over American player Bradley Klahn in just over one hour at the Shanghai Masters, reports Gol.hr on October 9, 2018.
Croatia’s best tennis player led 1-0 lead in sets against the 22-year-old, had two match points in the second set, and even had the service for the match in the third, but it was not enough to overcome the 48th best tennis player in the world.
Borna Ćorić, however, did place into the round of 16 after defeating American player Bradley Klahn 6-4, 6-2. In the first round, Ćorić defeated the triple grand-slam winner Stan Wawrinka for the first time in his career and played an excellent game in his second appearance against the American qualifier. Ćorić defeated the 104th best tennis player in the world after just 75 minutes.
Ćorić had a break at the start of the match and calmly kept his advantage until the end of the set. In the second set, he took the service from his opponent at 2-1 and 4-1, which helped him in the rest of the match.
In the next round, the young Croatian tennis player will play Argentine player Juan Martin del Potro, the No. 4 tennis player in the world.
In Tianjin, Petra Martić has advanced to the quarterfinals after winning 1-6, 6-0, 6-0 over China’s Liu Fangzhou (WTA-150). Though Martić lost the first set after her opponent took over her serve twice, Martić did not lose a single game after as a result. In the remaining two sets, Martić was better with her first serve, scoring 76 percent of the points.
This is Martić’s third win in three games against Liu.
In the quarterfinals, Martić will play against the winner of French player Caroline Garcia and Chinese player Zhang Yuxuan.
