Preparations are underway for the Sinjska Alka in Vukovar which will be held on May 6, 2017.

The famous Sinjska Alka will run this May in Vukovar! The Alka, which has been traditionally held in Sinj the first Sunday of August since 1717, will be held outside of Sinj for the fourth time in its long-standing history. This is, however, the first time the event is being held outside of Sinj by the decision of the people, and not by political directives. The event has only been held outside of Sinj in the cities of Split, Zagreb, and Belgrade, announces Vukovar.hr on April 3, 2017.

Around 20,000 guests are expected to attend the event, and Mayor of Vukovar Ivan Penava calls on everyone to join in on this historic Alka.

“The Sinjska Alka in Vukovar is a historic event that confirms the great friendship between Sinj and Vukovar. Vukovar and Sinj are cities that are connected by the famous battles of our history which are symbols of our defense of the motherland. It is my great honor and pleasure as mayor to participate in the realization of this extraordinary event that involves a difficult organizational task, but is of great importance for all of Croatia. Once again, Sinj and Vukovar will unite the whole country and the diaspora,” said Penava, who further stressed that this is a spectacle where every participant is including themselves in a part of Croatian history.

There will be 4047 seats set up for the spectacle in Vukovar, and a large LED screen will be sure to draw the attention of those outside of the immediate action.

“Maintaining the Sinjska Alka in Vukovar is not only a historical connection between 1715 and 1991, but also the unity of the Croatian east and south. This is a story based in the past but is intended for the future. Running a formal Sinjska Alka in Vukovar is not only a gift of Vukovar but is also a gift to all the patriots who bear 1715 and 1991 in their hearts. The Alka Vukovar will, therefore, be dedicated to all Croatian defenders,” explained Stipe Jukic, President of the Alka Knights Society of Sinj.

“We call on all patriots and lovers of Croatian culture and traditions to join us in this historic moment and celebrate Croatian unity with us once again. We welcome everyone who wants to visit Vukovar to this historic occasion and we believe that everyone will be extremely satisfied with the hospitality of Vukovar,” concluded Penava.

Ticket sales for the event will go through the Tourist Board of Vukovar and the Sinjska Alka Museum in Sinj. Tickets are currently 100 HRK.

All information about the sale of tickets will be available on the official website of the City of Vukovar, and proceeds from the tickets will be donated to the Center for Education of Children with Disabilities “Juraj Bonacci” Split, a subsidiary of Sinj.
