On July 7, 2018, the festival of Ojkanje and an evening of song, dance, and folk customs will be held at the Vrlika fountain, organized by the Cultural Arts Association “Milan Begović” and the Tourist Board of Vrlika.
KUU Milan Begović will perform folk dances ojkanje singing which is under the protection of UNESCO.
Folk dancing from Vrlika was mostly performed in front of churches or fields. The rhythm of this particular dance is performed without a musical accompaniment, and instead, the rhythm is played by the stroke of the dancer. During this folk dance, the weight of life in the country and the strength and endurance of the people of this region are displayed.
Ojkanje is the oldest type of singing in Croatia. According to experts, ojkanje is the remainder of what’s left from the pre-Slavonic Balkan singing from Dalmatia, adopted and preserved by Croats.
At 17:30, the folklore ceremony starts in the town and at 18:00 a folklore program begins.
Six KUDs will be present and everyone is invited to participate in this cultural program.
