Situated in a deep bay on the western side of Korčula island you’ll find Vela Luka. The town with the largest population on the island, the area is adorned with vineyards, olive groves, pines, beaches, and beautiful cultural heritage. A place for musicians, artists, creatives, locals, and traditionalists, Vela Luka is known for its Cultural Center which consists of a museum, gallery, and library which speaks to the rich history, culture, and art of the town.
Even more notably, Vela Luka is famous for Vela Splia, an extraordinary archaeological site and one of the most important prehistoric cave dwellings in Europe.
Another perk of Vela Luka is the island of Proizd, located just a short boat ride away from the central town. Named Croatia’s ’Beach of the Year’ in 2007 and one of the best beaches in the Adriatic by the Telegraph, Proizd is off the beaten path, a paradise away from the crowds, and boats some of the clearest waters you’ll see in your lifetime. Boat rides to the island in the summer usually run 3-4 times a day. The boat trip takes about 35 minutes each way.
