Dalmatia: the land of wine, seafood, and a lot of hearty pastas, risottos, and breads. While it may seem impossible to find gluten-free options in our carb-crazy coastal paradise, you’ll be happy to know that alternative food options do exist in Split. Perhaps a sign of the times as Split adjusts to the many dietry needs of today’s world, here are some places that will suit your gluten-free needs.
Galerija Food: Located within the walls of Diocletian’s palace, Galerija Food is known to have gluten-free options available for its patrons. While the menu changes, Galerija is also vegetarian friendly – offering dishes such as wok tofu, hempseed pasta, and green barley.
Makrovega: Split’s favorite tried and true vegetarian restaurant, in addition to offering a plethora of veggie dishes, Makrovega offers gluten-free options as well. Be sure to check in with your waiter to see what’s on offer when you’re there, and be sure to check out Makrovega’s many veggie, vegan, and sugar free options too.
Toto’s Burger Bar: While this burger bar offers everything from burgers to veggie noodles, healthy is definitely at the forefront of this establishment’s mission. Asking to get your burger wrapped in lettuce is just one of the options you have here, and Toto’s also offers a range of desserts that are raw, lactose, and sugar-free.
Perivoj: One of the finest dining establishments in Split, Perivoj is known as much for their desserts as they are main courses. Be sure to try their knockout gluten-free cakes (and lookout for cakes sans eggs, sugar, and dairy).
Step by Step Health Food Bar/Restaurant: The place to go for a range of gluten-free options, Step by Step will not disappoint. One of the highlights to this restaurant is the gluten-free pizza (which we hear is truly a delight), while the menu here is full with everything from seafood to spinach muffins and homemade bread.
Superfoods: Newly opened in Split last year, Superfoods is located in the “Split 3” district of the city, and is your go-to to stock up on healthy fare. Known for their cold-pressed juices and smoothies, Superfoods is also big on raw foods and vegan and veggie soups. In addition to goat cheese omelettes for your mornings, you can also indulge in their many chia seed specialties and bubble teas.
Matoni: Located just outside of the center, Matoni is known for having a creative menu complete with veggie, vegan, and gluten-free options. Almost always in the top 10 restaurants in Split, you’ll be sure to receive a guaranteed quality meal suited to your dietary needs.
In addition to the gluten-free options available in Split, it’s also okay to let your waiter know that you suffer from a gluten-allergy or have an intolerance to gluten. You’ll be happy to know that while many restaurants may not offer gluten-free options on their menu, they’d more than likely prepare what you desire. Don’t hesitate or be shy in asking!
