The ninth edition of the Mediterranean Film Festival Split (FMFS) will be held from June 3 to 11 across three locations around Split. 78 films from 39 countries will be shown, with tickets in very high demand for this year’s festival. There are five regional and five Croatian premieres this year, and FMFS is quickly becoming the center for film in the whole of the Mediterranean.
Among some of the films at the festival will be winner of this year’s Berlin film festival “Fire at Sea” (Fuocoamare) directed by celebrated documentary filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi. Others include “The Road to Istanbul”, “Tourism!”, “Anticipation”, “Everything is Coming”, “Tales from the Asphalt”, “Chevalier”, and “Frenzy” (to name a few).
A multitude of accompanying events will follow the films at this year’s FMFS, including a presentation of the new program ‘School in the Cinema’, a joint project of the Croatian Audiovisual Centre and the Art Cinema in Rijeka. Part of this event will be free, running local classics ‘Vuk samotnjak’ and ‘Družba Pere Kvržice’. In addition to the standard locations of open-air cinema Bačvice and Cinematheque “Zlatna Vrata”, the largest organization of this year’s FMFS is a new location with a terrace cinema named “Tesla”, showing a series of short films every evening.
FMFS’s cooperation with Ekran this year has helped to develop these new ideas, and Ekran’s equipment will be used at the new location in the middle of the city center, which is sure to attract many tourists and film enthusiasts alike.
There are many delights this year, from short films nominated for an Oscar, winners of Cannes and Berlin, to the program Cartoon d’Or, which is presented in cooperation with Animafest.
