Matea Vuletić of Brasserie on 7 is the winner of the first Latte Art Throwdown in Šibenik!
On October 22, 2017, the very first latte art competition was held at Šibenik’s Fortress Baron. Baristas traveled from all over Croatia to test their artistry on the foamed-tops of Croatia’s favorite drink – coffee, reports Sibenik.in on October 22, 2017.
Matea Vuletić, a barista at Split’s famous restaurant Brasserie on 7, was the only female in the competition. She also beat out the boys to secure the title of the first Latte Art Throwdown!
“We all have a competitive spirit, but first we socialize with our colleagues. Aside from bringing new knowledge, we share what we know with everyone else so we can host similar events together. A combination of all of our ideas and experiences is a way we can all be better at our work,” said Vuletić.
Second place was won by Siniša Popovic, while third was awarded to Damir Slonjšak. The event was organized by Šibenik barista and bartender Tomislav Stančić, who himself has been awarded many times for similar competitions.
“I’m thrilled with my colleague’s response, and as rain falls, I thought the viewers would not come, but they came. What matters to me most is that many Šibenik citizens participated, and those who did not do well are also satisfied,” said Tomislav.
The rules of the competition were pretty straightforward.
After arranging the participants in pairs, the jury chose who advanced into the next round where they had to draw demanding figures such as a swan!
“I am glad that baristas from all over Croatia came – they came from Zagreb and Split, but also from Murter and Pirovac to show our domestic strength,” concluded Stančić.
The jury had three members, one of whom was Zoran Trkulja, a barista trainer at Franck, who told us that the latte art culture in Croatia started in Šibenik.
“The first academy in Croatia was launched by Romeo Lambaša from Šibenik. The story begins in ‘Bar Italia’ and thus spread throughout Croatia. One of the world’s first contests was in 2011 at Solaris, and this is the first event for coffee in Šibenik after that,” Trkulja concluded, adding that their goal is to bring more competitions to Šibenik and expand them into various disciplines.
Bravo, Matea!
