Future of Žnjan? Split Mayor Expresses his Wish

The good news? The people of Split have a say, too!

At the beginning of November, there will be a tender for Žnjan with a concept of recreational zones, cycling trails, greenery, promenades, and then – at least one hundred meters from the beach – catering facilities.

This is the essence of the response of Split Mayor Andro Krstulović Opara regarding the future of Žnjan and the entire area from Zenta to Duilovo, reports Dalmatinski Portal on October 25, 2017.

“The area between Zenta and Duilovo covers a lot of space where the citizens have only learned to know for coffee and dusty parking – really, this area can offer a lot more. Compare it with Copacabana or with other beaches that have embellished large tourist and economic centers around the world,” Opara used as an example.

As Opara said, all of these beaches have the same concept, including recreation, large beach areas, some hundred meters of small facilities, bicycle paths, a promenade, road and then catering facilities.

“We want to see this concept in the contest we will be announcing at the beginning of November according to the diagram we agreed with the ministry, the county and others,” Opara announced.

Opara also reiterated that the city administration called on citizens to make their thoughts heard through a survey on the city’s website.

“Žnjan is not about bars a few meters from the sea. That’s what we have to forget. There will be room for caterers, but it will not be just that. I want to see gleaming recreational areas where it will be enjoyable for tourists to stay throughout the year. An area of educational, recreational, and cultural significance,” the mayor underlined.

When asked for a more detailed explanation of the temporary solution, Opara added:

“We have spoken about this, and according to the law, it is possible for 12-square-panel modules to be set up according to the management plan. This plan will bring a newly established Concessionary Assistance Council. That is, the council will decide according to the management plan, and we will ask the county for approval for this transitional period.”

Meanwhile, the plan and the tender will be announced early next month. The legal procedure, Opara added, will last for than a year as Žnjan cannot be accessed as it has been so far.

“We want to bring a whole and tidy plan to the widest democratic platform,” concluded Opara.
