Good News for Next Summer: Split Airport to Operate 24-Hours a Day

Zagreb Airport will not be the only airport to operate 24-hours a day next summer.

The Croatian Minister for Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, Oleg Butković, has announced that Split Airport will run 24-hours a day from next summer, reports ExYuAviation.com on August 11, 2017.

This will considerably calm the crowds to the busy airport in the summer. Remember when we shared this with you just last week?

This will also solve the problem of having to land in Italy. What are we talking about, you might ask? To refresh your memory, remember when a Croatia Airlines flight on the way to Dubrovnik was diverted to Rome earlier this season? To put things simply, a Croatia Airlines flight from Zagreb to Dubrovnik was unable to land in Dubrovnik due to high winds in June this year. The flight was also unable to return to Zagreb because the airport there supposedly did not have enough crew to receive the aircraft. And Split airport? Well, that was closed. Because the aircraft was unable to fly to another Croatian airport at that time, the Croatia Airlines flight was forced to divert to Rome. We’d like to think that this scenario will be completely avoided come next summer.

Split Airport, which is far busier than Zagreb Airport in the summertime, is only currently open from 06:00-22:00.

“We are a tourist oriented country and, as a result, Split Airport must be open 24 hours per day during the summer. Weather conditions are much better than in Dubrovnik as there is no strong wind. If necessary, the state will participate in covering part of the expenses. We will surely find the funds,” confirms Butković.

This is not the only change Split Airport will be seeing. In 2019, the new terminal at Split Airport should also be completed. The new terminal will be over 35,000 square meters and have a basement, ground floor, first floor, and a gallery. The terminal should be able to accommodation around 3.5 million passengers a year. Zagreb Airport is currently the only airport in Croatia to operate 24-hours a day.
