Planning a trip to Makarska from Split? You might want to pay close attention…
For those of us lucky enough to holiday in Croatia during the summer, we know that a world of coastal paradises is never more than a few steps away. From Split, Dalmatia’s capital and central transport hub, many blissful blue boroughs are never too far out of reach, and one of our favorite getaways from Split is surely the Makarska Riviera.
The Makarska Riveria, which is 60 kilometers in length, is reachable in just 80 kilometers (or just over an hour) from Split. The first town in the Makarska Riviera is Brela, which is followed by Baška Voda, Promajna, Krvavica, Bratuš, Bast, Makarska town, Tučepi, Podgora, Drašnice, Igrane, Živogošće, Drvenik, Zaostrog, Podaca, Brist, and Gradac.
Under the Biokovo mountain, the Makarska Riviera boasts a sunny summer climate and is known as Dalmatia’s beach heaven where tourism first began long before the first hotel opened in the area in 1914. Makarska’s top attractions are Nature Park Biokovo, St. Mark’s Church, Svetiste Vepric, Peninsula of St. Peter, and Kacic Square. Apart from beach hotels, holiday apartments, cafes, pubs, and traditional tavern restaurants, Makarska is known for its many monuments, and particularly its astronomical observatory and monument to World War II victims. There is even a shellfish museum, archeological collection and fort in Baška Voda which boasts items dating back to 2,000 years B.C.! And if that alone doesn’t excite you, legend has it that King Arthur was born in Igrane, and each year, the King Arthur’s Knights Society hosts a ‘King Arthur Night’.
Just one and a half hours from Split Airport, Makarska is not a difficult destination to reach – though, without a car, it could be a nightmare. While you can get from Split to Makarska via the Split bus station for cheap, overcrowded buses with faintly working air conditioning may not be your favorite way to travel – and don’t even think about taxis, as fares in the summer are at their peak. Unfortunately, there is no boat to get you directly from Split to Makarska (yet), but we do have a solution you might be interested in.
