Learn the Old Folk Dances of Split with KUD Jedinstvo!

Daniela Rogulj

KUD Jedinstvo will spend every Thursday this summer teaching the people of Split the famous folk dances of the city.

Members of the Cultural Artistic Society (KUD) “Jedinstvo” from Split have presented the program ”Šotobraco Splitom” which this summer, in cooperation with the Tourist Board of Split, will enrich the presentation of the city’s cultural heritage.

Every Thursday evening throughout the summer, the most frequented locations in the city including Pjaca, the Riva, Peristyle, and Fruit Square will host performances of old folklore dances, exhibiting the recognizable choreography of Split from the past centuries.

The young folk dancers of “Jedinstvo” will take the performance a step further, encouraging tourists and guests to learn the basic steps of the seasoned Split dances they perform.

KUD Jedinstvo, founded in 1919, is one of the oldest and most successful cultural societies in the Republic of Croatia. In the early 1950s, KUD established a folklore section which is part of today’s ensemble.

The folklore group has 11 choreographies in their compilation which are accompanied by a mandolin and tambura orchestra and are performed in traditional national costumes.

The cultural society has around 400 members in their folklore ensemble, mandolin-tambura orchestra, the school of folklore, the school of mandolin and guitar, female vocal section and the veteran’s club.
