The cold and strong winds took no prisoners over the last few days, and the Croatian national flag sat atop park Marjan in Split was yet another victim of the storm.

Hurricane-force bura ripped its way across the coast with 130 kilometers winds, which surely broke branches and seriously affected many of the trees and greenery at Marjan park, reports Dalmacija News on January 7, 2017.

A site that was particularly peculiar was that the national flag atop Marjan – a symbol that represents the threshold of the “green lungs” of Split – was not flying! The bura, with its icy cold winds, has actually ripped its way through our national flag. Luckily, photographer Miroslav Lelas was on site to capture photos of this unique view.

“I do not remember the last time that the Croatian flag was not flying on Marjan, but it’s not about any kind of sabotage, but about the bad weather. We are waiting for the first auspicious day in the weather where it will make sense to replace the flag with a new one,” said Robert Koharević, director of Park Marjan.
