Did you know that you could be in Ljubljana, Slovenia in just 6 hours from Split?

We know we’ve been tempting your road trip bugs lately by showcasing just how much freedom traveling by car around the region allows, and today, expect nothing different as we dip our toes into the trip from Split to Ljubljana.

Now, many of you may be instantly turned off when you think about driving from point A in Croatia to point B in Slovenia because you could easily assume driving from one country to the next is anything but easy. While that’s a fair assumption to make, we must first refresh your memory on just how lucky we are to be in Europe, and especially the Balkan region, where country-hopping is standard and straightforward.

Yes, we know that there are more than a few ways you could choose to travel between the Dalmatian capital and the capital of Slovenia, but once we lay it out for you, you’ll see why a road trip is the best.

1.) While you could take a bus from Split to Slovenia, none, as you would imagine, are direct, and they do involve stops in Šibenik, Vodice, Zadar, Zagreb, Bregana, Obrezje before Ljubljana. With limited routes on limited days, traveling this way will take you over 10 hours!

2.) Did you know there are no direct trains to take you from Split to Ljubljana? Because the thought in and of itself should be a turnoff, one option would be to take the train to Zagreb followed by the bus to Ljubljana from there – but why waste your time?

3.) If you’re thinking of flying from Split airport, we wish you the best of luck – there are no direct flights between the two destinations! Though you could fly to Zagreb and bus from there (expect to spend a pretty penny), another option would be to take the hour-long ferry to the island of Brač and over to Brač airport. Starting this April, passengers can find a direct flight on Adria Airways – but the catch is that they run only twice a week.

What option are you left with, then? Well, driving there by car, of course! Fortunately for travelers wishing to take this route, the drive from Split to Ljubljana is just around 6 hours and passes through some of the most beautiful Croatian scenery, from the coast to the inland areas and the mountains. If you do choose to drive, you may even consider making a stop at Plitvice Lakes to break up the trip!
