A look at Split in history with the help of the Facebook group Split kroz povijest.
The fires that have recently devastated Dalmatia saw the people of the region come together to protect the livelihoods, homes, and land of those affected.
For the most part under control today, we thought we’d look back in history to another fire that threatened the center of Split at on August 27, 1971.
A quote from Damir Duplančić’s article in Slobodna Dalmacija:
“The first ‘fire’ to date in the history of Jugoplastika was on August 27, 1971. Around 14:00, a fire broke out in the warehouse that housed finished rubber products and plastics. The upper floor of the newly built warehouse, which was full of exported products, quickly erupted in flames. Firefighters fought the flames until dark. The material damage of the fire exceeded an enormous 20 million Dinar. In addition to working day-to-day to rebuild the destroyed roof structure, it took several months to begin normal operations at that facility.”
The photos, in black and white, exhibit many of the citizens coming together, and the tireless effort of firefighters, to protect the city they hold so dear.
