The first post-war elections in Split, in photos.
As we head to the polls today to vote in the local elections, we thought we’d take a look back at this important day in history with the help of the Facebook group Split kroz povijest.
These photos are from the election in 1945 – the year women’s suffrage was achieved in Yugoslavia.

“The first elections were held in freedom…A celebratory mood throughout the day…Women participated for the first time in the election of the national government…Groups marched to vote with flags and songs,” Slobodna Dalmacija.

“Today is the day of the election for the National People’s Liberation Assembly and for the regional NOO. There are 42 polling places, which began at 6 am and were already quite alive at that time. Women came with flags and songs. The young people also came singing and clapping in groups, and after they voted they marched around the town and around the National Square where they danced all day. Old farmers and their women even came out to vote in festive dress…Some of the powerless old men and women were transported to the polling stations, and for the sick patients who could not get to the polling station, the polls came to their homes at their request. Other colonists, as well as priests, were voting… The election went with full lines, without the slightest incident,” Kisić.
The polls are open in Split today from 7 am – 7 pm.
