Split in History: Pan Am’s “Wings to Yugoslavia” (1964)

Daniela Rogulj

Did you know that Yugoslavia was the only Communist-controlled country in today’s Eastern Europe that Pan Am flew to during the Cold War?

Pan American World Airways, more commonly known as Pan Am, was a cultural icon of the 20th Century – and the largest international airline in the United States since its inception in 1927 until its collapse at the end of 1991.

Even more interesting is that the airline chose to fly to communist Yugoslavia during the Cold War, showing just how important the country was at the time.

A rare, 16 mm “Kodachrome” documentary for Pan Am Airways was released in 1964 titled “Wings to Yugoslavia”. The film features footage of Yugoslavia during the 1960s as a travel commercial for the airline.

And the best part? The film shines the spotlight on Split in some incredible footage from the 1960s.
