Last night the well dressed and artistic crowd of Split were out, and they were hungry for some art. With the perfect spring evening to set the tone under a twilight lit sky, Neno Mikulić presented his newest exhibition, “Uroboros” in the old city hall of Split in the piazza. The exhibition featured paintings, drawings, and sculptures, and art enthusiasts enjoyed champagne and small bites to make for a perfect gallery opening.
Neno Mikulić was born in Split in 1964, and graduated from the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology in Zagreb in 1987. Since 1986, Mikulić has worked on newspaper cartoons and comics, and in December of 2002, he graduated with a degree in painting from the Art Academy in Split. Mikulić is currently working and living in Split.
His latest exhibition, “Uroboros” was inspired heavily by the likes of Francis Bacon and Damien Hirst. His ‘new wave’ works in this latest exhibition are playful yet frivolous, a meticulously thought out hybrid of flatness in paintings, volume sculptures, and grotesque caricatures, mostly made out of wood. Motivated by the Mediterranean, it’s no surprise that much of this exhibition depicted the sea. The first floor of the gallery was shown through the sea, the second showing the contrast of the ground and sea, and the third floor for the more intimate with nude models.
Prevalent in this exhibit were sailors on the high seas, animals such as birds and sharks, and butterflies floating through the souls of his subjects, showing a witty metaphor for the feeling of love. Mikulić not only pushes the boundaries of his own art, but also breathes new life into the contemporary works he produces. Neno Mikulić is authentic, drilling the idea that ‘’art is made out of art” into this exhibition.
The opening night was led by Mikulić himself, with Zlatko Gall and Andela Prnjak leading the opening ceremony. We highly encourage a visit to “Uroboros”. The exhibition will be open for two weeks, until May 31st. Don’t miss out!
