With the First Day of School Around the Corner, the Split-Dalmatia Police Department Takes a Stand for Safety

Daniela Rogulj

With the start of the new school year quickly approaching, the Split-Dalmatia County Police Department has implemented the action ‘Respect Our Signs’ in an effort to increase the level of safety for children and all other road users.

With this effort, special attention is given to first grade pupils of primary schools, as for many of them this is the first time they will independently participate in pedestrian traffic. As part of the implementation for this action, in consultation with representatives of the educational and pedagogical staff and school principals, students in the first class will be educated in order to acquaint themselves with the basic rules of safe participation in traffic (crossing the roadway, use of pedestrian crossing, riding in the car, cycling, moving sidewalk, etc.). Principals, teachers, and children will be introduced to the possibilities of using web tools for the learning and assessment of traffic culture called ‘Prometna učilica‘, at http://ucilica.skole.hr/

In September, police officers will every day, especially during the beginning and end of classes, intensively supervise the roads, streets and intersections in school zones. Officers will also specifically monitor the obligation of drivers to pedestrians, their vehicle speeds, their transport of children, and the stopping and parking of vehicles. Officers will take all legal measures for drivers who make traffic violations, especially violations of non-compliance that advantages the passage of pedestrians on a pedestrian crossing and other offenses in school zones.

Child safety in transportation is the responsibility of everyone, and it is expected that all participants in traffic are responsible in their behavior and should contribute to the success of this action.

All drivers are urged to respect traffic regulations and drive cautiously, especially in the areas around schools and kindergartens.
