Autonomous Cultural Centre Medika Getting Shut Down?

Total Croatia News

Memebers of Autonomous Cultural Centre (Autonomni kulturni centar, AKC) Medika received an eviction notice stating that they have until Tuesday (May 16) to leave the premises and hand the keys over to the City, Jutarnji reports.

AKC Medika has been encouraging the development of independent culture in the city since it was founded in 2001. It is a non-partisan, non-profit and non-governmental citizens’ association whose aim is to spread alternative politics, culture, opinions and expression.

Neither AKC Medika nor the City spokespeople were willing to give any more information until a press conference which will be held tomorrow.

Jutarnji reports that City increased rent by 300% five years ago and that Mayor Bandić’s election program mentions building a congress centre at Pierotti Street (AKC’s current location) or Zagreb Fair, and there has also been mention of building a hotel behind AKC Medika.

Stay tuned for more details which we will know after tomorrow’s press conference at 11 a.m.
