Despite the bad weather last week, the fourth Big Game Fishing competition was held on Hvar from October 5 to 8, 2017.
This year’s Hvar Cup attracted captains and their crews across Croatia and Italy who joined the competition with glee last week, reports HRT on October 10, 2017.
Around 20 crews sailed the Hvar seas despite the lousy weather which first saw the southern wind (jugo) pick up, followed by the bustling bura. If you were in Dalmatia last week, you know exactly how these gusts of wind felt.
Fortunately, however, the competition went without a hiccup, and with some enormous fresh catches of fish.
“The catches you can see behind my back show that this season was good,” says Tonči Luketa, member of the Croatian Sport Fishing Alliance (HSSRM).
The first catch of the sea was reeled in by Bepo Svalin, captain of the boat “Corto”, who was also the youngest captain at this competition, but it was the captain of “Tajna veza” who ultimately caught the winning fish of the competition.
And the best part? The winner of the Hvar Cup will receive an invitation to the World Championships of Big Game Fishing which will be held in Costa Rica next March!
Three tuna were caught during the Hvar Cup, weighing an unbelievable amount!
The first of the tuna weighed 52 kilos, the second 70 kilos, and the third 57 kilos – and when you get a good look at the size of these fish, the battle for a beast this big must have taken a lot of adrenaline and might.
Hvar has once again proven that it is an excellent host for big game fishing competitions, and tourists aboard cruisers in the Hvar Town harbor were able to experience the traditional fishing culture of the island town during the days of the contest.
