With just a week to go until voting begins for Best European Destination 2017 on the European Best Destinations website, we continue our daily photo look at Croatian nominee, Stari Grad.
Access is a key factor with any destination, and Stari Grad is best placed on Hvar in that regard. The main traffic of course comes on the daily ferries from Split into the ferry terminal just outside the town (and direct connections from Italy also exist in the season), but for those with a little more money at their disposal, there is another option.
And let’s face it, how many destinations in the world have a functioning airfield in the middle of a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
Stari Grad has a small but valuable little airstrip in the middle of the Stari Grad Plain, a two-minute ride from town, and while images of Heathrow are not to be expected, the grass runway does serve an important fuction both for luxury tourism and adrenaline sports. For here you can go sky-diving during the season, and it is an ideal place to drop in by helicopter or small plane (max six passengers permitted).
