“After Boston, New York and Split, I feel that this might be the biggest challenge. I watched a fisherman in Hvar town this summer as he was sitting in his boat next to those giant expensive yachts repairing his nets (“karpi mrižu”) and talking to his friends. I noticed, that nobody seems to notice them. Nobody is taking pictures. Nobody is listening to them. I asked myself, if anyone knows what the fisherman is doing? Does anyone know who he is? What is he talking about?..
This is why I will accept the challenge and tell the story about a farmer, about a konoba (tavern) and about us, about our language, our songs, about salted anchovies, which this fisherman was fishing, as was his father and the father of his father. Because that is who we are, that is Hvar and that is Dalmatia, that is Croatia.” Miki Bratanić
