Vrlika is famous for its folk traditions. One of them is the Silent Round Dance (Nijemo Kolo), which is protected by the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
According to the Vrlika tourist board, the Nijemo Kolo is a closed (not necessarily) circular dance, performed without music, although it can be either preceded or followed by vocal or instrumental performances. Nowadays it is most often performed on the occasion of religious or folk festivals.
Watching a performance of the Nijemo Kolo is a unique experience. Probably the best opportunity is the open-air opera Ero, the Joker, which takes place each summer in Vrlika and has parts of the dance incorporated into the piece.
There are many videos on youtube showing the Silent Round Dance, but today, we will show you something a bit different. The FB page Vrlika za one kojima je Vrlika u srcu shared 2 videos showing us how the tossing element (male and female) of the round dance is made. Here they are, watch and learn..
