December 14, 2023 – Black Slavonian pig meat received the European protected mark of authenticity, the European Commission announced in the Official Journal of the European Union on December 12, 2023.

As the Croatian Ministry of Agriculture states, this product name was entered in the protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications and it was protected throughout the European Union. The EU designations on the packaging guarantee that the consumer is purchasing an authentic product.

The procedure for the protection of the name “Meat of the black Slavonian pig” was initiated by the agricultural and service cooperative LETA from Našice, which submitted a request to the Ministry of Agriculture for the protection of the designation of origin under the name “Meat of black Slavonian pig”.

The protection of black Slavonian pig meat is based on the specific quality of the meat, which is the result of the genetic basis of the way pigs are kept and fed, as well as the age at which meat is produced.

The meat of the black Slavonian pig has a specific pronounced aroma due to the profile of the fatty acids, which is also the result of traditional feeding of fodder produced on the farmer’s own grounds. Also, due to the significant range of movement and greater activity and blood circulation of the muscles, the meat of the black Slavonian pig is characterized by a darker color than the meat of classically fattened commercial pigs.

The product specification “Meat of black Slavonian pig” can be found here.
