Colours of Croatia: Sunsets at Sea

Total Croatia News

Colours of a Croatia is a photos series capturing the various aspects of life in Croatia, this week we bring you sunsets at sea from my time sailing the Adriatic.

I have worked four seasons at sea, sailing the Adriatic and this is my first year not working on a yacht, but last week, I got the opportunity to go back on board for a week. There are many aspects of the job which are difficult, to say the least, but there are also a lot of positives – watching every sunset for an entire season was absolutely one of them.

When I lived in London, life was fast. More often than not, I went to work in the dark and came home in the dark, depressing doesn’t even begin to describe it. City living has its fun but after moving to Croatia I realised just how out of tune I was with myself and nature. When life moves at 1,000 miles per hour, there is barely time to breathe, let alone stop and smell the roses or watch a sunset.

But this is something life in Croatia and a life at sea offers.

On the boat, it was the one part of the day I would allow myself to stop, even if just for a few moments. The wants and needs of others melted away as I watched mother nature, paint yet another dazzling sky. Tangerines, fiery reds, pastel pinks and blues… no two sunsets are ever the same.

I wrote a personal post the other day saying “after years of hostessing, there are many interesting observations I could spout off about human nature, but here is one – there are two kinds of people in this life, those who watch sunsets and those who don’t.”

Ok, of course, this isn’t 100% accurate, I doubt there is a single person alive who has never watched at least one sunset. But, I do believe that there is a group of people who, when given the chance, will always stop. Whereas, after working on yachts, I noticed that there were people who remained indifferent to sunsets, every, single day and it blew my mind.

If I ever become indifferent to nature, I know I need to do a serious reality-check.

After years at sea, I have hundreds of sunset photos and I don’t think I will ever get sick of them. Who knows, maybe one day I will turn them into a coffee table book… I am not a professional photographer, but I think the variety of sunsets speak for themselves. So, here they are, sunsets from my time sailing the Adriatic. No editing (I am not that talented), no filters, just mother nature doing her thang’, enjoy.
