August the 26th, 2024 – Life as a Croatian pensioner can be difficult, but one Croatian city has appeared on the list of the best cities for retired life – if you’re US retirees, that is.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, an ever-increasing number of retirees from across Europe and even from across the pond in the USA are taking the plunge and deciding to retire outside of their home countries. According to the US Social Security Administration, more than 700,000 US retirees receive their monthly pensions in foreign countries. Europe is a particularly popular continent, and several factors explain why.

Some US retirees want to experience the culture of their ancestors while others may want to spend more time on the continent they enjoyed during many happy summer holidays. Depending on the country or city in question, plenty of different European destinations can offer a lower cost of living, a pleasant climate or a high quality of life. This goes without even mentioning the irresistible lure of free healthcare – an entirely abstract concept for US citizens who endure a healthcare “system” we as Europeans cannot remotely understand.

As the Travel and Leisure portal states, the Republic of Croatia, which is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination for US nationals, is also very attractive as a place for retirement. Not only does this remarkable little country have approximately 5,800 kilometres of stunning coastline, but hot, dry summers and mild winters create a decent climate.

The second largest city in the country, Split, offers easy access to some of the best beaches in the country. The Roman Emperor Diocletian built his own retirement palace there, and its remains are included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Plenty of restaurants, bars, cultural and entertainment venues and many English-speaking residents make adaptation to life in Dalmatia’s capital relatively easy.

The lifestyle the Croatian city of Split can offer US retirees is of course excellent, but the red tape the country is infamous for makes it exceptionally difficult for non-EU nationals to retire here unless they have Croatian citizenship, EU citizenship, or have some grounds to apply for either.

Aside from the beautiful Croatian city of Split, the list of ideal locations for US retirees in Europe also includes: Algarve, Bordeaux, Budapest, Ljubljana, Alicante, Valletta, Kinsale and Prague.
