Design District Zagreb June June 16-19

Daniela Rogulj

From June 16 – 19, centered on Martićeva ulica, the first edition of the Design District of Zagreb will kick off! A new and different kind of design festival, Design District Zagreb promotes urban development and transformation of the Martićeva neighborhood, affirming it as a new and hip destination for tourists and artists alike.

The program of the festival is designed to bring about participation from the widest circle of creative enthusiasts, with a massive selection of exhibitions, art and design installations, workshops, lectures, musical events, and performances all throughout unusual locations in the area.

In an effort to revive the numerous shop windows, abandoned yards, parks, galleries, streets and even the occasional rooftops, residents of the neighborhood including designers, artists, architects, musicians and other creative beings will come together to bring forth a new wave of development.

The current value and creative potential of this neighborhood will be presented in the “Guide to the Design District of Zagreb”, which will be a first hand account for the design festival patrons, making them thoroughly familiar with the local values and protagonists of the creative scene in the neighborhood.

Design District Zagreb was conceived as a year round project with long term goals and activities that affirm the zone bounded by streets Šubićeva, Zvonimirova, Draškovićeva and Vlaška, with Martićeva as the central axis of this creative quarter.

Awareness of this project has been raised through networking, the existing creative scene, and through the many activities put forth through online platforms, printed publications, and on joint communications through social networks. Most recently, the occasional revival of unused spaces has encouraged the creation of new content and events.

The culmination of the design events held year round will come together in the form of Design District Zagreb festival. Over 100 projects will be displayed, representing the temporal, very concentrated versions of the content that are thriving in this neighborhood. This festival exists as a an incentive to research and bring about a new socio-economic model of regeneration.

All designers, architects, restaurants owners, musicians, artists, and entreprenuers in this creative scene are encouraged to mingle with patrons of the festival that know little about design at all, all in an effort to bring about a newfound awarness and beauty of this thriving creative scene and neighborhood.
