January the 1st, 2025 – Disc golf is steadily taking root in Croatia, evolving from a niche pastime into a burgeoning sport. Thanks to the efforts of the Croatian Flying Disc Federation (HFDS) and the dedication of key advocates, the country is carving its place on the international stage.

Following their recent participation in the World Disc Golf Championships in Australia, we spoke to several leading figures of the Croatian disc golf community to discuss their experiences, challenges, and aspirations.

A Respectable Finish in Australia

Heading into the World Championships, Croatia ranked 16th on the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) list—a position they aimed to defend. Competing against 23 teams, they achieved their goal by maintaining 16th place, despite challenging matchups against higher-ranked teams.

Dinko Šimenc, HFDS President, expressed pride in the team’s performance and gratitude toward supporters who contributed to their crowdfunding campaign on the Bona Fides Invest platform. “We’re grateful for the donors who supported our journey to Australia,” he said. “Their contributions allowed us to represent Croatia with pride at this prestigious event.”

Although Croatia didn’t break into the top 12 as they had hoped, the team gained valuable experience. With the next championship set for Lithuania in two years, optimism for further improvement runs high.

The Allure of Disc Golf

For newcomers, disc golf might sound like a whimsical cousin of traditional golf. However, its blend of strategy, technique, and accessibility sets it apart. Played by throwing discs into metal baskets across 18 “holes,” the objective is simple: finish with as few throws as possible.

“Disc golf is 90% mental and 10% physical,” said Aleksandar Aki Vucković, Croatia’s PDGA Coordinator. “But that 10% often feels entirely mental too!” Players traverse distances of up to 10 kilometers per round, making fitness an asset, but the sport’s emphasis on technique ensures it’s accessible to all ages

Team Dynamics and Strategy

Team competitions introduce a collaborative element distinct from individual play. Croatia’s team roster includes three men, two women, and one player over 40, with results compared collectively against opponents. “This format emphasizes shared strategy and camaraderie,” Šimenc explained. “It’s an honor to play for Croatia—it brings out the best in us.”

Despite logistical challenges, including illness among team members during the journey to Australia, the team showcased resilience and unity.

Pioneering Women in Croatian Disc Golf

Danica Pajtak, Croatia’s most decorated disc golfer and HFDS Vice President, is an advocate for increasing female participation in the sport. She encourages women to embrace the game, highlighting its supportive community and the personal growth it offers.

“My message is: stay persistent,” she said. “Progress will come, and the friendships and experiences along the way are invaluable.”

Growing the Sport in Croatia

Disc golf in Croatia has seen steady growth, with active hubs in Varaždin, Rijeka, Zagreb, and other cities. The HFDS organizes a national league and various tournaments, regularly drawing 50–90 participants.

Vjeran Tuhtan, HFDS Vice President, believes infrastructure development is key to expanding the sport’s reach. “Local governments and private investors are starting to recognize disc golf’s potential as a recreational and tourist attraction,” he said.

For those curious about the sport, Tuhtan offers simple advice: “Try it. You’ll discover a fantastic mix of nature and competitiveness.”

A Game for All Seasons

The appeal of disc golf lies in its versatility. Players like Vucković and Pajtak have honed their skills across diverse terrains and conditions, from forested courses to snow-covered ski resorts. Despite its accessibility, mastering disc golf takes years of practice—a challenge these athletes embrace wholeheartedly.

“Disc golf is a marathon, not a sprint,” Tuhtan reflected. “Mistakes happen to everyone, but it’s about how you recover. This lesson applies both on and off the course.”

Crowdfunding Campaign on Global Crowdfunding Platform Bona Fides Invest

The Croatian Disc Golf Team’s journey to the World Championship in Australia wouldn’t have been possible without the community’s generous support. To help fund this ambitious endeavor, the team launched a crowdfunding campaign on the Bona Fides Invest platform titled “Support the Croatian Disc Golf Team on their Journey to the World Championships in Australia!” The campaign has so far raised over three and a half thousand euros, which has been crucial in covering travel and accommodation expenses.

Although this amount is only a fraction of the total costs, it highlights the incredible enthusiasm and goodwill of supporters who believe in the team’s potential. The campaign remains active, and the Croatian Flying Disc Federation (HFDS) encourages anyone interested to contribute. Every donation helps not only in alleviating financial pressures but also in showcasing the collective power of community-driven efforts to promote and support emerging sports.

This initiative reflects the growing interest in disc golf in Croatia and underscores the role of grassroots efforts in nurturing sports talent. For the team, this journey represents more than just competition—it’s an opportunity to represent Croatia on the global stage and inspire the next generation of players.
