Earlier today, an unpleasant surprise for eastern Croatia.

A 4-Richter-degree earthquake shook Slavonski Brod this morning around 8.45 am, the Seismological Service of the Republic of Croatia announced, adding that the intensity measured on the Mercalli-Cancani-Sieberg scale was 5 degrees in the epicentre, reports Večernji List on June 7, 2018.

The epicenter was located about 10 kilometres north of Slavonski Brod, at a depth of two kilometres. In addition to this rather strong earthquake, which was felt by most citizens in the wider area, there was also a second, weaker earthquake.

According to local media, some of the regional schools decided to evacuate students from the classrooms and keep them away from school buildings as a precaution.

The Slavonski Brod town administration announced that the authorities were immediately sent to primary schools and kindergartens to assure the safety of the children. “According to the information provided, all schools and pre-school institutions acted according to the protocol in the event of an earthquake and children were taken out of school buildings. Citizens will receive further information about the earthquake through the media and the official channels,” said the authorities in a statement.

So far, there are no reports of injuries or damage.

“The loud noise was heard first, and then the ground started shaking. Furniture and the whole house shook. It did not last long,” said one inhabitant of Levanjska Varoš.

The Brod-Posavina County administration called on citizens to be cautious.

According to the SBplus website, the strongest earthquake in the area was recorded on 13 April 1964. The 5.6-degree earthquake completely destroyed 2,170 homes and damaged about 8,000 houses and other buildings.
