The local population in the area around Peruća, the second largest artificial lake in Croatia, hasn’t ceased to protest against an announced power plant construction project.
When the news broke out about the impending construction of a thermoelectric power plant on the shore of Peruća lake on Cetina river, local residents were quick to disclose their anger. Back in February 2017, they launched a petition protesting the project, calling it a ‘geostrategic suicide’.
According to their statement, the power plant would entail a robbery of Croatian citizens from the economic perspective, but also a potential ecocide over Cetina river. Considering the designated land plot for the power plant isn’t located far from the Peruća dam, the locals stated the project would seriously endanger the natural drinking water resources in the area.
As there hasn’t been any reaction from the local authorities or from the state level, two citizens’ initiatives organised a lovely manifestation to make it clear they haven’t given up just yet. On Sunday, October 15, an eco picnic will take place on the shore of Cetina river, at the old bridge in Panj village.
The picnic was devised under the motto ‘Against the force, against the darkness’ (Kontra sili, kontra mraku), according to the organisers who also announced the event will include a peaceful eco protest for Cetina and against the power plant project.
Initiatives Ne daj se Cetino (Hang in there, Cetina) and Javno je dobro (Public is good/Goods are public) are inviting all citizens, nature-lovers, hikers, cyclists, bikers and other enthusiastic groups to join them in this social gathering that aims to protect the priceless natural resource.
“All of you who have Cetina running through their veins, all of you who keep the river in your hearts and who are about to come and say a loud, honourable NO to the mighty capital… Bring along your children, grandmothers, grandfathers, cousins, pets… as the protest will be peaceful. Cetina is our drinking water, it’s our home, our house. Show them there’s a lot of us who care about protecting our beautiful Cetina”, said the organisers.
