Huffington Post Associate Lifestyle Editor Suzy Strutner, with the help of travel site Hoppa and expat sites Numbeo and Expatistan, name Dubrovnik and Zagreb as two of the cheapest cities to visit in Europe.

Huffington Post writes that travel portal Hoppa made the lives of budget travelers easier by curating a list with the cheapest cities to visit in Europe. The European cities that made the list were based on average prices for common expenses such as hotel costs, taxi rides, and coffee. The information for this study was gathered from both “mainstream booking sites” (think booking.com) and expat sites such as Numbeo and Expatistan that calculate and compare the cost of living between various countries or cities.

Lucky for Croatia, two of our cities made the list: Dubrovnik and Zagreb. Huffington Post named Dubrovnik’s well priced hostel accommodations around the city walls as something to look out for, and for Zagreb – grab a cheap cinema ticket for $9 (60 HRK) or visit the many museums and medieval alleyways.

While most of us living in Croatia would disagree, Dubrovnik was actually named as the cheapest city in Europe to visit, coming in at #1. Zagreb, a city many of us would consider more affordable to visit, came in at #5.

To make things more interesting, TCN compared the cost of living between Dubrovnik and Zagreb on the sites used for this study.

On booking.com, the cheapest accommodation you could get in the center of Dubrovnik today is 221 HRK, and in the center of Zagreb, 160 HRK. Both of these accommodations are hostels.

Here is the cost of living comparison on Numbeo:

When you compare the two cities on Expatistan, Dubrovnik is actually considered 11% more expensive than Zagreb for food shopping (i.e. combo meal at a fast food restaurant or 1kg of tomatoes) and 22% more expensive than Zagreb for entertainment (i.e. 3 course dinner for two plus wine, or beer, coffee and, cocktails out).

Congrats to Dubrovnik for being named the cheapest to visit, but for those of us living in Croatia, we still may consider it the other way around.
