July the 18th, 2026 – A long-anticipated wish is finally becoming a reality as the very first new tram line in Zagreb in 25 years is beginning to take shape.

One of Zagreb’s most ambitious infrastructure projects is steadily moving forward as construction continues on the Croatian capital’s first new tram line in a quarter of a century. Poslovni reports that the new tram extension along Sarajevska Cesta marks the capital city’s first expansion of its tram network since 2000, representing a major milestone in efforts to modernise public transport and improve connections with southern districts.

According to the powers that be within the city administration, significant progress has already been achieved on both the road and tram infrastructure. Workers have completed the majority of the underground utility installation, including drainage systems, water supply infrastructure and heating pipelines. Hundreds of foundation piles and retaining walls have also been constructed, while excavation for the future tram corridor continues. Along the route, crews have already begun preparing the lower track structure where rails will eventually be installed.

The project includes 2.25 kilometres of new tram tracks, 1.8 kilometres of reconstructed roadway, eight new tram stops, a new turning loop and supporting ZET infrastructure, as well as modern utility and digital communications installations along the route.

The tram extension will connect Avenija Dubrovnik with the area around the Zagreb Marshalling Yard (Ranžirni kolodvor), providing a faster public transport link to rapidly developing parts of Novi Zagreb. For many residents, the project ends more than two decades without any expansion whatsoever of Zagreb’s tram network. While the city has modernised rolling stock with new low-floor trams in recent years, the network itself had remained largely unchanged since the last extensions opened back in 2000.

The tram project is also tied to a broader transport upgrade that includes a new road connection and future links to Croatia’s motorway network, creating an additional southern entrance to Zagreb. The infrastructure investment, valued at approximately 25 million euros, is expected to receive very significant co-financing through EU funds in cooperation with Croatia’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure.

According to the city administration, this new tram route will improve mobility for thousands of residents, all while simultaneously laying the foundation for future public transport expansion. It seems that Zagreb is set to continue strongly investing in new trams, infrastructure and sustainable urban transport.
